The air we breathe is one of our most valuable resources, and a basic element for the existence of human beings and life on Earth. The growing number of populations, and the desire of being mobile, as well as the formation of huge urban areas, create new challenges.
This duality between prevention of air pollution and rising demands for mobility leads to worldwide regulations reducing emissions.
New applications must comply with already strict levels and remarkable retrofit programs have been started in Europe, the USA and Asia. New emission regulations exist today and which will become valid in the near future.
Only engines with emission levels, regarding nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, below 90% of the current values will be able to comply with them. To better understand this, the example above shows a comparison between European and American regulations for 75 - 100 hp (56-75 kw) engines. The next sections go into detail about these new regulations.
